What
is Hydroponics ?
Hydroponics is a
millennial technique, that was used for the cultivation of plants in
water, long before the Christian era. All kinds of crops may be grown, in a
totally and natural way, such as :
- Vegetables : lettuce,
tomato, carrot, celery,watercress
beans, parsley, turnip, cucumber, etc.
- Fruits :
strawberry, melon, watermelon, etc
- Others : medicinal and aromatic plants, ornamental plants.
Advantages
of the Proposed Hydroponical Production |
a) For
Commercial Growth :
- It can be used in greenhouses, under
straight technical rules.
- Its independence from climate conditions,
allows a strict control over the production system.
- Almost complete automation, is possible
with this method.
- Larger production per m2, than what is
normally get out in soil cultivation.
- Earlier crops growth.
- No soil erosion, nor environmental
contamination.
- Drinking Water with balanced
nutrients is used.
- This method allows the more efficient
use of water, because it is recycled and does not contaminate the
environment.
- Total Hygiene and Cleaness
,
because vegetables cultivated with this system do not have contact with
the earth, eliminating the risk of contamination with diseases and
impurities.
- Natural Control of plant diseases, without
using agro-toxics.
- Excellent quality and High Nutritional
Value.
- For all these advantages, it has a higher
price in the market.
b) For Social Developing :
- It
is the best vegetable production system, that can be adapted to Food
Safety
and Food Security Urban Agriculture: it is ideal for
cultivation in urban and sub-urban (yards,
roofs, balconies, walls, gardens), without the need of soil.
- As crops in this
production, are grown without soil, there is no microbiological
contamination and for the same reason it may be asserted, its
nutritional quality, its high biological value and safety for good
helath.
- It allows the re-utilization
of worn out materials, that can be used to build the containers (wood,
plastics, etc.).
- There is a technical
package for Simplified Hydroponics, at a low cost.
- Easy to be learned, this
technique does not require preliminary knowledge.
- Hydroponics has a stimulating effect on people, as it gives a concrete result in the short
term, enabling them to consume what they plant.
- Income-Generation :
vegetable gardens bigger than 40 m2, can grow surplus for its
commercialization.
